Our Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal Axis (HPA-Axis) governs our stress response. When we are exposed to chronic stress, our HPA-Axis begins to malfunction and work less efficiently, causing a dysregulation in the HPA-Axis. The chronic stress which disrupts our HPA-Axis has four sources, including the well known perceived stress, as well as chronic inflammation, circadian rhythm disruption, and blood sugar imbalances.
If we find ourselves suffering from symptoms of HPA-Axis Dysregulation (HPA-D), we can take measures to address this. The best place to start is adjusting our lifestyle. We can work at managing our stress, focusing on eating a low inflammatory and blood sugar regulating diet, getting enough good quality sleep, engaging in the right amount and right type of exercise, and not exposing our eyes to bright light at night, while getting natural light on our eyes early in the day.
